You may have noticed some new trees planted along our sidewalks while traveling through Mt. Adams this spring. In total, 16 new trees were planted along Belvedere, Fuller, Hatch, St. Gregory, and Celestial Streets. Varieties include Prunus Okame Cherry, Brandywine Maple, ‘Vanessa’ Persian Parrotia, and ‘City Sprite’ Zelkova. This marks an exciting first milestone in our tree-planting initiative, and we’d like to take a moment to celebrate and thank those who have generously donated their time, energy, and resources to enhance our neighborhood.
Thanks to these contributions, we’ll all enjoy the benefits of cleaner air, cooler summer temperatures, more habitat for birds and pollinators, and added beauty for everyone who spends time in Mt. Adams.
Special thanks go to the Mt. Adams Civic Association Board for matching donations to cover project costs; to the neighbors who volunteered their sidewalk space; to City of Cincinnati Urban Forestry Specialist Doug Fritsch, who was instrumental in envisioning this project alongside us; and to Pasquale Scaramuzzini, Dirtwerks (concrete contractor), and Todd Bowling of Oberson’s Nursery, both of whom generously discounted their time and materials.
Following the success of the spring planting, we’re preparing for a second phase this fall. Over the summer, we’ll be distributing planting request forms to eligible residences. Eligibility is determined by the City’s Urban Forestry Department in coordination with the Department of Transportation & Engineering, based on factors like proximity to driveways, utility lines, and the potential for each tree to thrive.
If you’d like to support more trees on the Hill, you can DONATE TO THE TREE FUND. Donations help cover the cost of concrete cutouts and topsoil and are tax-deductible. The trees themselves are selected and provided free of charge to our neighborhood by the City’s Urban Forestry Department through local funding.
Thank you again to all of our supporters—and happy spring!
Warmly,
Katherine and Zand
